Acne Scars RemovalFor those who have suffered with severe cystic acne, the removal of acne scars is still a concern long after the acne has been treated. Sometimes, there are spots of discoloration present on your skin that you may think is scarring but this is a condition that should disappear on its own. This condition, known as Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation, is a discoloration of the skin that occurs most frequently in individuals with dark skin color. The brown spots can last longer with excessive sun exposure. It can persist for up to eighteen months so you might consider using a chemical peel to speed up the disappearance of these brown spots.

Actual scars left by acne will last forever unless you use a removal treatment to get rid of them. Acne may result in scars that are depressed, such as ice-pick scars or those that are raised above the regular surface of the skin such as a Keloid scar. Scars are left behind after severe acne as a result of the body’s response to an injury. When inflammation is present, the body’s molecules are fighting infection. This can result in scarring. Scarring is more severe in some people than in others and some people’s scars will diminish somewhat in their appearance over time. However, they do not go away.

Here are some acne scars removal treatment you can choose from:

1. Dermabrasion

Scars that are caused by increased tissue formation, or Keloids, are the result of overgrowth of new tissue. Dermabrasion is often used as a removal treatment for this type of acne scars and is considered the most effective by many. You will be given a local anesthetic for comfort, and then a brush which turns at high speed is used to remove the surface skin.  Microdermabrasion is similar but uses aluminum oxide crystals which pass through a vacuum tube to remove the surface skin instead of a brush. Since only the cells of the utmost outer layer of the skin are removed, this is not a good system for improving severe scars.

2. Laser Removal Treatment

Acne scars may be removed with laser removal treatments. There are a variety of lasers that can be used to recontour scar tissue or completely remove it. The type and intensity of the laser depends on the results that are desired. Often, results can be obtained from a single treatment but may leave redness behind.

3. Skin Surgery

For depressed acne scars like Ice Pick scars, the removal treatment may require skin surgery where a punch excision is used on each individual scar. This will leave a hole which must be repaired with sutures or skin grafting. Skin grafting may also be needed if there are extensive conditions below the surface are worse than those on the surface of the skin.

Keloids are rarely treated with surgery for the removal of acne scars. Since they are formed in response to an injury, the removal may only lead to further development of Keloids as a response to the skin surgery. Some of these scars respond to injection of steroid into the surrounding skin or the application of topical retinoic acid. Otherwise, they are best left alone.

Choosing the right removal treatment for your type of acne scars is important since the results can vary depending on the condition of your skin. It is important to get advice from a Dermatologist who is qualified to determine the best treatment plan for you.
