How Acne Is Caused?

Most people suffer from acne at some time in their lives without ever understanding the cause of this annoying and embarrassing skin condition. For those whose outbreaks occur more frequently or with greater severity, understanding the causes and what can be done to give them clearer skin is especially important. There are plenty of products that will guarantee you a clearer complexion with regular use but until you know the cause of your acne, you can’t effectively treat it.

Acne starts when the skin’s sebaceous glands around the opening for hair follicles become plugged up. The plugged pore may swell, which leads to the familiar pimples, deep lumps or even nodules that can occur. Many people believe that acne occurs only in adolescents as a result of changing hormones and this is a large part of the problem. Both sexes produce hormones called androgens during puberty, which include testosterone. This hormone signals the body to make more sebum, which is the waxy substance that clogs the skin’s pores.

Anyway, back to my synopsis of what acne is all about…

1. Oil Skin

Oily skin has long been considered a contributing cause of acne but there are other things that can affect it as well. Most teenage acne occurs between the ages of ten and thirteen and disappears by the age of twenty. Unfortunately, there are also a large number of adults who experience acne. Although it occurs in both males and females, women are most likely to experience adult acne in a mild to moderate form. This is most likely due to the fact that hormones contribute to the occurrence of acne. Women who take oral contraceptives may also have an increased occurrence of acne due to the hormones but others see an improvement in the condition of their skin once they start taking the pills.

2. Poor Diet or Bad Hygiene

Some of the things commonly thought to cause acne, such as a poor diet or bad hygiene, are actually not responsible for the skin condition. They can, however, aggravate a condition that already exists. The same may be said for stress. Heredity does play a part in whether you develop acne but it is not the single, determining factor.

3. Bacteria

Doctors now know that bacteria can be a cause of acne. When the excessive production of sebum clogs the openings to your hair follicles on your face, neck, chest, and back, bacteria grows inside of the clogged follicles. This bacterium causes non-inflammatory acne, which can lead to inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne can cause cysts to form that might rupture and form scars.

There isn’t a single, specific cause of acne any more than there is only one type of acne that people can develop. You won’t prevent it or get rid of it by avoiding certain foods or scrubbing your face ten times a day. Some doctors believe it is just the difference in the ways people react to the increased production of sebum in their skin and that some react more severely than others.
